Elemental affinities effect primarily which jutsu you can create this doesn't effect what you can learn. This is mainly to keep from having rainbow characters that know a technique of each village affinity. Each affinity has a strength and a weakness. With that you can build a general shape of a circle with it looking like this:

This merely represents which is over the other. Acquiring a second Affinity requires training and you can only get one secondary affinity at Chuunin level.

Clans. Clan are already comprised of two affinities therefor you cannot acquire third.

VOID is not an element therefore you cannot align with it.

An attacker's damage is increased if he is using an element that is elementally superior. For Example

FIRE > WIND

Fire will do an extra +2 damage per rank per attack on wind aligned characters, but Water will also do +2 damage per rank more damage to fire aligned.

You can only align with an element that is close to you.

Here is a list of all the possible alignments:

You might be wondering why is there two ways to align to the same elements? Thats because your primary is was you start with so you do the most damage with it your Secondary is the one you learn therefore do less damage.

Primary: +2 damage (per Rank)
Secondary: +1 damage (per Rank)

You can learn techniques outside of your affinities only when you reach chuunin rank.

The templates after this point are made to allow you to make jutsu easily and allow us the ability to make the decision if it is approvable. The are 9 templates, one for each type of jutsu including: Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, Taijutsu, Ijutsu, Kenjutsu, Doujutsu, Items, Kinjutsu, and Fuuinjutsu . Others could be added later.

Ninjutsu:
The basic jutsu of range fighters and most common. It will be probably the most used template in creating jutsu. This template is also used to make kinjutsu possible ninjutsu. Though it is called a kinjutsu it still is registered as a ninjutsu with the Other Special Information or "OSI" marked kinjutsu. These jutsu effect the enemy only thus meaning they will either do damage to Health or Stamina. This is because chakra is mental therefore can only be altered with Genjutsu, Ijutsu, Doujutsu, or Fuuinjutsu. The weakness of this group is Genjutsu and Doujutsu.

Genjutsu:
This type of jutsu create either artificial sounds, sights, smells, tastes, or even worlds. This type is for those who don't like to get physically involved in any way. These jutsu require an extreme amount of mental power to use and escape. The can last from mere seconds to a lifetime. A person trapped in a genjutsu immediately loses conciousness and jutsus being used are interrupted and fizzled Genjutsu are also the most specific jutsu, requiring specific methods of entrapment and escape. There can be conditions put on their escape and durations of how long the genjutsu will last. These jutsu effect Chakra and/or Stamina in opponents or usually Damage bonuses or Defense in Allies. Most genjutsu are one person to another person, making the users easy targets for people not caught in the genjutsu. With that said, the weakness of this group is Taijutsu, and Kenjutsu, but is also able to defend against unknowing opponents.

Taijutsu:
This type is designed for those who use melee to defeat there opponent. This type is designed to increase damage done by punches, kicks, or any other general bodily attack, thus does not include any weapons. Taijutsu artists use their high stamina to do quick flurry-like techniques that cause alot of damage. The techniques will damage Health or Stamina of the opponent. This template also includes taijutsu styles The weakness of this group is Genjutsu, Doujutsu, and Kenjutsu.

Ijutsu:
This type is generally used to heal allies, however can be used for damage on opponents. This type specifically uses Chakra to damage. Its Affinity is Void or on rare occasions Earth or Water. User of this style have the most effective jutsu in combat. They can cripple an opponent or simply sap them of their chakra, stamina, or health. They can heal allies and boost their damage. This group is used for not only support, but as a way to damage. This group essentially are the Ace in a group of shinobi. This group does not have any weaknesses.

Kenjutsu:
Kenjutsu is the type of techniques that use a weapon as a medium. Punches and kicks are not included. Users of Kenjutsu use either Chakra or Stamina or both to do damage. They have mastered a special way to use a weapon and can do things extraordinary things with them. This can be anything from using wind to cut a more devasting blow using chakra or merely the adjustment of the strike to deal extra damage with stamina or using the wind and technique to slice through entire people. This template includes all weapon wielding and knowledge styles

Doujutsu:
Doujutsu are specifically for the bloodline gifted few. They usually are abnormal occurences in the eyes, however there are other possibilities such as birthmarks. The doujutsu also often goes hand in hand with genjutsu. This is because doujutsu also usually cost a large amount of chakra to use this makes them commonly more intelligent than the normal person. These jutsu are the only type that can be transferred without teach but cannot be taught. The doujutsu can only be inherited and not learned, the only exception being transplantation. Doujutsu also include clan specific jutsu. Doujutsu also require two affinities to utilize effectively.

Items:
Items are for things that would not involve the creation of handseals or manipulation of chakra or stamina. Items such as soldier pills, explosive tags, puppets, and anything but actual weapons (IE Kunai, Shiruken, and sword). Masters of items such as explosive tags are often calledtrap masters for their ability to skillfully plant the tags to trap the opponent in a perverbial encasement. This is not the only tactic though. People have been known to use innovative items like smoke bombs and other things as a way to win in battle. Items however are limited by your attributes.

Kinjutsu:
Jutsu of this category tend to fall outside the boundaries of the others and are therefore disignated as kinjutsu. For example Tajuu Kage Bushin no Jutsu falls as a Kinjutsu for its ability to solidify real beings rather than to form mirages or shadows, yet it isn't a summon. Technque that allows do the opposite of their closest related family often fall into this group. For example, a vampiric techniques would fall here however its closest family is Ijutsu. These techniques are also last resorts for most.
